The Mayor of Mid & East Antrim met the ‘Friends of’ Bashfordsland Wood & Oakfield Glen on Saturday 14th May 2016.
The Mayor commended the group on their hard work and dedication over the last 10 months and thanked them for their interest in the site and for giving back to the community.
The Friends Of group have been meeting each month, rain or shine, since September 2015 and continue to go from strength to strength. They have so far carried out a range of important tasks such as invasive species removal, river clean ups and nest box building.
Voluntary work can be inspiring and rewarding –a real learning experience. You can develop new practical skills, meet new people and learn about your local environment. Volunteering can help you gain confidence and self-esteem and can also have health benefits as you are being active outdoors. You can really make a difference and give back to the community, and of course, it can be great fun. Volunteering also provides huge opportunities to enhance your CV and is highly commended by employers.
As a member of the ‘Friends Of’ volunteer group, you’ll be helping conserve and protect your local woodland and playing a vital role in bringing our woods to life and opening them up for everyone to enjoy. Tasks vary from wildlife surveys to tree management to river cleans. Anyone can volunteer. It doesn’t matter what experience you have, what skills you have, or how much time you can commit, everyone has something to give.
The Friends of Bashfordsland Wood & Oakfield Glen meet on the second Saturday of each month at 10am (to 1pm) at Oakfield Community Centre. If you are interested in getting outdoors in the fresh air, learning new skills and meeting like-minded people the Friends Of group could be for you.
