Hazelwood Woodland Management Project

Hazelwood is an important area of hazel woodland on the slopes of Cave Hill.  It was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1991.  The site is threatened by Sycamore, an invasive non-native species.

Belfast City Council, in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland have undertaken extensive management including:

  • removal of mature sycamore,
  • planting of hazel,
  • coppicing of over mature hazel stools, and
  • on-going monitoring.

Awareness raising and engagement is ongoing through events and volunteer opportunities.

This project was initially funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Breathing Places grants programme.
